What should you consider?

Standard 6lb carpet cushion

The typical padding rating system defines the DENSITY of carpet padding in pounds. 6 pound padding is usually dense enough for use with most residential carpet and falls within most carpet manufacturers’ warranty guidelines. It’s also slightly softer than the 8lb cushion.

8 pound carpet cushion

For a little more cost and a lot more value opt for an 8-pound density rating if you want the firmest, sturdiest and longest-lasting option, which is especially useful in high-traffic areas. High-density padding reduces the likelihood of wrinkling in your carpet. An 8-pound padding provides better support for your carpet and will generally make it wear better, especially in high traffic areas like stairs and hallways.
